Rehome update: Ashkhabad loving life after racing

What a difference two months makes!

In May we took the decision to retire six-year-old mare Ashkhabad as she wasn't enjoying her racing.

A magnificently bred mare by Derby winner Harzand, Ashkhabad raced twice in National Hunt flat races and four times on the flat.

Loved by the staff, she was regularly ridden by Joanna Mason and Serena Brotherton in her morning exercise.

However, despite having a wonderful attitude for training she didn't have the pace to win under rules and it was time to let her find another vocation. After a short break we made Ashkhabad available through our rehoming programme. A mare blessed with impeccable manners, good looks and a fine pedigree it didn't take long for her to find a new home!

Askhabad is receiving the very best of care.

Rachel came to view Ashkhabad with a view to rehoming her out of racing, and she immediately fell in love. Ashkhabad is now enjoying life off the track in the north-east of England where she has a first-class home with acres of paddocks and stunning views across to Roseberry Topping on the edge of the North York Moors.

"She has had a lovely holiday mostly in the field for a couple of months, while doing some in-hand and liberty work," says Rachel. "She's seen the vet, farrier, dentist, physio, nutritionist and bit fitter. Now she's in light work and and has just started some lunging."

"She's been a good girl and very clever so far!"

Ashkhabad's long-term goal is eventing and we're all excited to see how this beautiful mare gets along in her new career. We love following her progress and Rachel keeps in regular touch.

Don't forget, if you are looking for an ex-racehorse visit our rehoming pages where we regularly have horses available off the track.

We've sent horses as far afield as Pembrokeshire in West Wales, Kent, Cornwall, the Lake District and the far north of Scotland in the last couple of years and it's likely that if you live in Britain you're not far from an ex-Mick and David Easterby racehorse!
