Tragedy at York: Dubai Instinct 2016 - 2023

While the papers mourn the loss of Godolphin's Creative Force in the Duke Of York Stakes little has been mentioned of our very own Dubai Instinct who suffered a fatal injury in the closing race on the card at York on Wednesday.

In racing the stable staff form strong bonds with the horses in their care and the loss of a horse is always a devastating blow which is felt throughout the yard.

Bought out of Brian Meehan's stable at the Tattersalls Autumn Sales in 2020, Dubai Instinct had become a firm staff favourite.

He ran twice over hurdles before switching back to the flat, winning at Ripon and being placed twice on the Knavesmire in 2021.

He had a few training setbacks and after a long break he returned to the track at York in May 2023. Racing in Stephen Rainford's pink and white silks for the first time he was set for a summer campaign.

Sadly Dubai's return would end in tragedy as jockey Shane Gray pulled him up entering the home straight as they travelled on the inside of the 18 runner 'Stuey Weston & Friends Getting Out Handicap'.

After examination by the vet the injury was found to be beyond repair and Dubai Instinct was euthanised.

Dubai Instinct was a gentle and kind horse and he will be sadly missed.

Rest In Peace Dubai.
