Moetchandon had shown a lot of speed on the gallops during the first months of 1963. Although I was limited in what I could do at home with the three furlong gallop, and also given the quality of the horses in the yard at the time, I had nothing that could lay up with Moetchandon when he hit top speed.

I needed to get Moetchandon on the track and eventually my attention was drawn to one race in particular, the Gibside Two-year-old Plate over five furlongs with a purse of £580 on Northumberland Plate day. I booked Eddie Hide to ride.

I could call him as the winner from two furlongs out as the some of the jockeys started to scrub away whilst others went through the motions pretending to make an effort. Moetchandon won on the bridle at 11/2, the winning margin of eight lengths back to Johnny Seagrave on Altimeg and could have been eighteen as walked over the line. If I’d had the balls to put £500 on then I’d never have even broken a sweat.
