Fibre was owned by owner/breeder Hugh Hartley and made his debut at York in May 1964. He won the 'Vane Plate' at Stockton in 1964 at odds of 25/1 where he caught Charmarose on the line. It was only his second race and was a very appropriate winner as his owner was the steward of the meeting. "He hadn't done a thing at home to suggest her was ready to win a race," said Mr Hartley after the race. "Look how he is blowing. Obviously there is some ability there".

Fibre won the 'Lowton 3yo Selling Hurdle' at Haydock the following year.

At the end of 1965 Fibre was sold to Owen Brennan and represented several different yards in the coming years.
