 Ripon Racecourse is one of the oldest racing venues in Britain, with meetings recorded as far back as 1664 on Bondgate Green. Racing moved through several temporary sites over the next two centuries, including a course beside the River Ure, before settling permanently on Boroughbridge Road in 1900, where the first meeting at the modern track was held on 6 August that year.

The course quickly became an established flat‑racing venue and has long been known as 'Yorkshire's Garden Racecourse' because of its landscaped setting and attractive surroundings. It has earned repeated praise from racegoers and was voted Best Small Racecourse in the North multiple times in the 21st century.

Ripon is a right‑handed, undulating oval of one mile and five furlongs with a sharp bend into a long five‑furlong home straight, one of the longest in the country. A chute creates a true six‑furlong straight course. The tight bends and undulations make it a sharp, tactical track that tends to favour handy, prominent racers.

Ripon's best known race is the Great St Wilfrid Handicap, a competitive six‑furlong sprint run each August and named after the town's patron saint. Later in the same month the course stages the Listed Ripon Champion Two‑Year‑Old Trophy, which regularly attracts high‑quality juveniles from leading northern yards. Across a typical season Ripon hosts around sixteen fixtures and offers prize money well in excess of £1 million.

The racecourse also has a distinctive place in racing history. In 1723 it staged Britain's first race exclusively for female jockeys, and during the First World War the southern half of the track was used as a base for No. 76 Squadron of the Royal Flying Corps. Today it sits beside the Ripon City Wetlands nature reserve and remains one of the most popular and picturesque small tracks in the north.
