Haydock Park Racecourse sits in Newton‑le‑Willows in Merseyside, on parkland bordered by Haydock, Ashton‑in‑Makerfield, Golborne and Newton‑le‑Willows. Racing in the area predates the course itself, with meetings held at Newton as early as the mid‑18th century, but the present racecourse opened in 1899 and developed rapidly under the guidance of Sydney Sandon in the early 20th century.

The track is a left‑handed oval of about a mile and five furlongs, largely flat and galloping, with a long four‑and‑a‑half‑furlong run‑in. A straight‑course chute allows sprints up to six furlongs to be run without a bend. It stages both Flat and National Hunt racing, with facilities that include multiple grandstands, private suites and even a small airstrip for light aircraft.

Haydock has become one of the north’s busiest and most important dual‑purpose venues, hosting around thirty‑two fixtures a year. Its major Flat races include the Group 1 Sprint Cup in September, the Temple Stakes in May and the Lancashire Oaks in July. Over jumps, the Betfair Chase in November is its flagship Grade 1 contest, supported by other high‑class races such as the Peter Marsh Chase and the Rendlesham Hurdle.

The course's history links back to the Newton‑le‑Willows meetings of the 18th and 19th centuries, with the Old Newton Cup surviving as a direct connection to those early fixtures. Haydock closed during the Second World War and reopened in 1946, later expanding its programme and facilities to become one of Britain’s leading regional racecourses.
