 Wolverhampton Racecourse stands at Dunstall Park in the West Midlands and has evolved more than almost any other British track. Racing in Wolverhampton began in 1825 and moved to the present site in 1888, where the first meeting was held on 13 August that year. The course operated as a turf venue for more than a century before undergoing a complete transformation in the 1990s. Floodlights were installed in 1993, making it the first floodlit racecourse in Britain, and the Queen reopened the revamped venue in January 1994.

The turf and Fibresand surfaces were replaced with Polytrack in 2004, and in 2014 the course was resurfaced again with Tapeta, becoming the first British racecourse to adopt the surface that was already widely used in North America . The track is a tight, left‑handed circuit one mile in circumference with a short two‑furlong straight, characteristics that give it more in common with American all‑weather tracks than with most British courses. It now stages only Flat racing on the all‑weather and runs more than eighty fixtures a year, many of them under lights.

The Lady Wulfruna Stakes is its most prestigious race, a Listed contest run in spring and part of the All‑Weather Championships programme. Wolverhampton has also become a key venue for horses making their first starts, with its reliable surface and frequent meetings offering consistent opportunities throughout the year.

Wolverhampton used to stage National Hunt racing decades ago, back in its turf‑track era, but that programme ended long before the modern all‑weather era. When the course was redeveloped in the early 1990s — floodlights installed in 1993, turf replaced by all‑weather surfaces from 1994 onwards — jumps racing disappeared completely. Since then it has been exclusively Flat, first on Fibresand, then on Polytrack, and now on Tapeta since 2014.
