Today saw the first village fete in Sheriff Hutton for many years and the centre-piece was the unveiling of the new stocks.

Village stocks were wooden punishment devices used in historic Britain to restrain a person’s feet (and sometimes hands) as a penalty for minor offences. Their purpose was public humiliation rather than physical torture, relying on villagers throwing flowers, stones, or rotten vegetables at the offender while they sat immobilised.

We contributed to the production of a brand new set of stocks for the village and today Mick Easterby unveiled the brand new stocks on the village green.

The fete was a huge success, with a rodeo bull, food stalls and a dog show.

The village has many wildlife groups and there were representations from the Hedgehog Project, the Sheriff Hutton Nature Group, and promotions, the Glebe Conservation Area and the History Society.

Thank you to everyone who made today's event a huge success!
