Racehorses can find friendship across a whole range of breeds and species!

Earlier this year we rehomed two-year-old filly called Edens Choice. She'd raced three times on the flat but didn't have the speed to be a winner and found her forever home with Ashleigh in South Yorkshire. Also living at the yard are our former racehorses Copper Burn and Frankyboy, but it was Dusty the miniature Shetland that she was drawn to.

"Edens Choice is doing really well not doing too much with her as I like to take my time with her retraining," says Ashleigh. "We have a lot planned for next year which I will keep in touch how she's doing. My miniature Shetland Dusty has come back from a little holiday away from home and she absolutely adores him!"

Grand National winner Don't Push It didn't like other horses and attempts to relocate him in the yard failed and he showed little interest in his food, until he was joined by a sheep.

His love of sheep became more intense so much that more were introduced to keep him company and he eventually lived with a whole flock.

Over the years there have been many tales of racehorses finding unusual friends. The 1992 Champion Chase winner Remittance Man would constantly walk his box until trainer Nicky Henderson introduced him to Nobby the Sheep. Remittance Man became obsessed with Nobby, so much so that when the sheep was returned to his flock and replaced, Remittance Man picked up the substitute and ejected him from the stable. Nobby was eventually found among the flock of 400 and returned to his soulmate.

US Triple Crown and Breeders' Cup Classic winner American Pharoah was inseparable from Smokey the pony. Smokey, a buckskin gelding, went everywhere with American Pharosh and would calm and offer reassurance to his friend.

"Smokey's my favourite horse in the barn,” said legendary trainer Bob Baffert. "It's sort of cool to see him out there before the races start. We rub his forehead for luck."

Closer to home La Jolie Fille, rehomed in 2023, was best friends with the stable cats when she lived here whilst Thirteen Shivers used to let the pigeons sit on his back!
